One of the most celebrated of all fugitive slaves, Josiah Henson is regarded by many as the man whose early life provided much of the material for Uncle Tom's Cabin. Like the self-sacrificing and revered character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Henson was born a slave, worked diligently, and was cordial to his master. He also became a preacher and remained loyal to his owner until mistreatment caused him, in 1841, to flee to Canada, where he found employment and resumed preaching. In his Autobiography, Henson keenly recalls--among other events--his life as a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, the role he played in leading slaves to Canada, and his visits to London and meeting with Queen Victoria. He also comments on the number of fugitive slaves enlisting in the Union Army and his brief return after the war to his old home in Maryland. An invaluable resource for students and teachers of Southern and African-American history, this book will be of interest to anyone devoted to the struggle for racial equality. Unabridged republication of An Autobiogrpahy of the Reverend Josiah Henson, published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Reading Massachusetts, 1969. Introduction by Robin W. Winks. Conclusion. 2 Appendices. Summary of Uncle Tom's Public Services.
